Strangled
Rhianna was strangled by an app driver after an argument in a vehicle. After police released him there was a widespread public outcry.
After strangling an 18-year-old trans girl to death, an app driver who showed up at the police station with the victim's body in the car was questioned and released on Saturday night (06). The victim was Rhianna Alves. The two left the municipality of Barreiras (BA) heading towards Luís Eduardo Magalhães (BA).
According to the suspect's testimony, published by the Correio newspaper, the aggressor allegedly put the young woman in a chokehold after an argument, claiming to have acted in self-defense. The transfemicide is under investigation by the Luís Eduardo Magalhães Territorial Police Station. According to information from the Civil Police, the 18-year-old suspect remains free after voluntarily presenting himself at the police station and confessing to the crime.
On social media, Drycka Santana, the young woman's sister, expressed her grief over her sister's death. “She had a bright future ahead of her, but she didn't listen to our advice. I always repeated the same phrase: 'Get away from those friendships, they will bring you down,' and it really did. Almost a month after that fight, someone comes along and simply kills her. May all those responsible pay, because I'm certain it wasn't just one person.”
The young woman was buried on Tuesday morning (9). Desperate, Rhianna's sister is asking for justice.
Organizations such as Fonatrans, the Permanent Commission on Sexual and Gender Diversity of the OAB Bahia (Brazilian Bar Association, Bahia chapter), and the Mothers for Resistance Collective published a joint statement, beginning with a call for reflection: What if it were the other way around?
"If a travesti or a trans woman had killed a cisgender heterosexual man claiming self-defense, would she be released immediately in the same way!? If the state claimed there was no flagrant offense, would it accept the narrative with the same ease!? The unequal treatment is cruelly apparent. Cisgender bodies receive instant credibility and protection."
