Melany died in hospital after being shot by armed assailants who arrived at her home and repeatedly shot her in what appears to have been a targeted execution.
Another act of violence was reported this Wednesday, February 26, around midday, in the municipality of Lérida, in northern Tolima. In the El Progreso neighborhood, Plaza Nueva sector, Melany Hernández, a well-known trans woman in the town, was murdered after being shot near her home.
According to preliminary information, armed men arrived at the rear of the residence and, without saying a word, shot her repeatedly. Witnesses in the area reported hearing at least four gunshots, causing panic among residents who were at home or passing through the area at that time.
The victim received immediate assistance and was taken in critical condition to the local hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to the Reina Sofía Hospital in Lleida, Spain, where doctors confirmed her death minutes later.
Those close to her indicated that, to the best of their knowledge, there were no recent threats or public conflicts that would have suggested such an outcome. Melany was known in the municipality for managing a nightclub and for her active participation in community activities in the area.
The National Police are conducting neighborhood canvassing, gathering witness statements, and reviewing security camera footage to clarify the facts and identify those responsible. So far, no arrests have been reported, nor has the motive for the crime been confirmed.
This homicide has once again raised concerns about security in municipalities in northern Tolima and adds to the cases of violence that are under investigation by judicial authorities.
